Sedation Dentistry

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the use of medication to relax or calm a dental patient, like intravenous sedation (IV Sedation).
There are 3 different levels of IV sedation: Light, moderate, and deep. IV sedation is a treatment with certain medicines that put you into a deep sleep, so you don’t feel pain during surgery. After you receive these medicines you will not be aware of what is happening around you. You should be very relaxed and may have no recollection of the surgical procedure.

IV sedation is a safe way to be perfectly relaxed and pain-free during a dental procedure that would be painful, take a long time, affect your ability to breathe, make you uncomfortable, or cause too much anxiety. Most people recover completely and do not have any complications after undergoing IV sedation. The medicine is given through a vein in your arm. Your doctor can adjust how deeply asleep you are during surgery. You will be watched very closely by the surgical team while your blood pressure, pulse, and breathing are continuously monitored.

IV sedation is usually safe for healthy people, however, there is a risk of problems if you abuse alcohol or medicine, have allergies, complicated medical history, smoke, or obesity. Before undergoing a dental surgical procedure, your doctor may meet with you for an evaluation. They will take a complete medical history to determine the type and amount of anesthesia you need.

During evaluation make sure you inform us of any medical conditions you have like diabetes, hypertension, or if you could be pregnant. If you have any questions or concerns about the use of IV sedation, contact us before you schedule your appointment.

SEDATION DENTISTRY – FAQ

IV sedation is a safe way to stay comfortable and pain free during the dental procedure. Some dental procedures make patients uncomfortable and affect their ability to breathe. IV sedation removes all those fears. You are watched very closely by the surgical team while you are asleep. Your blood pressure, pulse, and breathing are continuously monitored for your safety and comfort.

We offer Nitrous and IV sedation. Both are safe procedures that can be turned on and off like a light switch. Oral sedation involves taking a pill and the effects can last longer than normal. Nitrous and IV sedation are predictable and safe.
The duration depends on the procedure. If you are having multiple procedures done, it will take longer. Your doctor will give you a good estimate of how long he will need to complete the procedure.
The sedatives are given intravenously, through a vein located in your arm. Your doctor can adjust how deeply sedated you are during surgery.
No, you would need a driver to take you home. We don’t recommend you take an Uber or Taxi home.
It does both. Sedation helps you to be as comfortable as possible. The goal is for you to not experience any pain and to have no memory of the surgical procedure.
Sedation dentistry is a safe procedure for healthy individuals. Those who are at risk are those that
